Physicians provide primary and ongoing medical care to patients in their communities. They diagnose, treat, and help prevent common illnesses and injuries, while working closely with other healthcare professionals. When needed, they refer patients to specialists for further care. A successful physician combines strong medical knowledge with excellent communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. They demonstrate empathy, emotional intelligence, and a genuine interest in helping others, ensuring patients receive compassionate and personalized care.

Duties

    • Respond to patients’ medical and health concerns, including history-taking, diagnosis, investigation, treatment, and referral as appropriate.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality, impartiality, and professional ethics at all times.
    • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals in the community and hospitals to commission and coordinate care.
    • Promote health education and preventative care in conjunction with other health professionals.
    • Organize and manage preventative medical programs tailored to individual patients.
    • Provide specialist clinics for specific conditions or patient groups (e.g., diabetes, smoking cessation, neonatal care).
    • Achieve targets set by health authorities, such as child immunization programs or public health initiatives.
    • Liaise with pharmaceutical representatives regarding the development and use of new medications, maintaining professional boundaries.
    • Manage resources efficiently to meet patient and organizational targets, including digital referral systems.
    • Utilize IT systems for patient records, practice management, and reporting, contributing to digital initiatives within the practice.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of medical developments, treatments, medications, and complementary medicine.
    • Supervise and mentor trainee GPs and medical students; contribute to teaching at medical schools or hospitals.
    • Maintain a portfolio of continuing professional development (CPD) activities to ensure ongoing competence.

Physicians’ working hours can vary depending on their practice setting. In general practice, surgeries are usually open from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm, but physicians may need to work beyond these hours, sometimes up to 8 pm. They may also be on a rota for out-of-hours emergency work and carry out home visits.

A physician will spend a large portion of their time in clinics or patient consultations, but may also be required to attend hospitals, meet with other healthcare professionals, or participate in community health programs.
