Job description
Fitness and wellness coordinators work in a gym or and health facility where they manage its fitness and wellness programmes and services, including classes, seminars and special events.
They help people stay fit and healthy, and ensure the gym or health facility they work for complies with any state, local or national laws and regulations.
Duties
- Develop and lead fitness and wellness programmes and services
- Supervise staff, including fitness instructors and nutritionists
- Conduct surveys to assess interest in or satisfaction with programmes, events or services
- Coordinate schedules and resources
- Ensure the safety and cleanliness of facilities and equipment
- Organise training sessions and seminars for staff
- Develop marketing campaigns for programmes and services offered at the facility
- Work directly with clients to provide information and assistance with their health and fitness
- Organise and run events such as walks and runs
- Perform administrative tasks such as preparing budgets and purchasing plans

Study time

You’ll generally need to complete a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, health education, physical education or a related subject to become a fitness and wellness coordinator. Some employers prefer candidates with a master’s degree, which usually takes an additional two years to complete.
Prior work experience as a lifeguard, personal trainer or fitness instructor can be advantageous. Depending on your employer, you may need to be CPR-certified or even be certified as a CPR instructor.
